Yoga For Bigger Bodies: Gentle Core Strength

This series is open to all shapes, ability levels, and sizes.

Gentle Core Strength is designed for students who are familiar with Yoga and have a regular practice, or are beginning again with exploring a practice and want a gentle, slow and steady asana practice to increase core strength and stability.

The core isn't just our "abs", it's a vast group of muscles from hips to shoulders in the front, back and side bodies that support and mobilize them safely and efficiently. A stronger core may support ease with lower back pain and improve posture.

We'll meet on the mat and scaffold the practice in multiple planes of gravity by lengthening, strengthening, stretching. We'll explore a variety of gentle seated, sit/stand postures as well as laying on the belly (prone) or on the back (supine) with your own strength and the support of props. You might build a little heat in the body, you might enjoy the challenge of experiencing new ways to be in practice, but you'll always honor yourself and your breath by choosing the pace, options and props that support you in your body.

This series is open to all shapes, ability levels and sizes. This is an inclusive and nonjudgmental class that emphasizes Health At Every Size®, body acceptance and joyful movement. There are no weight/size requirements as everyone is welcome.

Please bring:

  • An open heart, curiosity, kindness, and a healthy dose of patience to meet yourself where you're at.

  • Bring a yoga mat if you have one, otherwise, you can borrow one from the studio.

About Bethany Batsell

Bethany became a teacher in 2018 after completing her 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training from Yoga Refuge Yoga Conservatory. That same year, in addition to teaching weekly classes at Unfold Yoga Studio, she began subbing workshops for Yoga For Bigger Bodies led by founder, Julie Westlin-Naigus. In 2020 she became the primary teacher for all three weekly YBB workshops and as of 2022 went on to become the owner and principal teacher of Yoga For Bigger Bodies. She is an Accessible Yoga Ambassador.

Throughout her life, from singing to dancing to running to living - she struggled to fully access her breath, to find her voice and to "fit -in". Practicing yoga has helped her to rely on the strength in her body, to amplify her voice, and to honor and find belonging in her experience as a plus-sized, fair-skinned, Black woman. Her love and gratitude for Yoga and a deeper connection to her whole self unfolded the more she practiced and was able to let go of perfection and reclaim body trust and liberation. This led her to wanting to share her experiences of transformation and to teach others how Yoga can support joy, healing, love and acceptance from the inside out.

Her yoga teaching, like her practice, emphasizes self-acceptance, amplifies positive self-talk, and focuses on the present and our presence in each moment by connecting to the breath.
